Anti Diva
Published in Hardcover by Random House of Canada Ltd (14 November, 2000)
Authors: Carole Pope and Carol A. Pope
Average review score:

From the voice of the sacred and the profane!!
When I was a young and impressionable teen growing up in Canada, ROUGH TRADE's music and lyrics were my religion and empowerment.
Now the voice of that group who's recently gone solo and had her early works released on CD is telling her story of her life in fascinating detail. I've always wanted to know what she's been up to, and where she really came from, and here you'll find it all. Her story is also a fascinating trip through the fun decades of the 70's, and 80's with many colourful people of the time, and her heartbreaking relationship with the divine Dusty Springfield. Even if you never heard of Rough Trade (you have my pity), this is one biography that'll continue to inspire whether or not you are sexually confused, or an outsider in the generations to come.

Any Old Way You Choose It
Published in Paperback by Cooper Square Press (June, 2000)
Author: Robert Christgau
Average review score:

Too Long Out of Print
This review is based on the original printing of this book, which came out in 1973. I don't know how long it's been out of print since then, but it was too long. The articles reprinted herein cover the late 60s to mid-70s, beginning with the Monterey Pop Festival and finishing with the New York Dolls, with the Beatles, Dylan, Elvis, Chuck Berry, The Byrds, The Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Alice Cooper, Stevie Wonder and many many others in between. These were some of Christgau's first rock writings, back when he was still developing his singular style, and as such might make this book a little easier introduction to someone encountering him for the first time. Christgau's been accused of being overly academic and big-word-loving, which is only true about a third of the time and which I personally don't mind. I'm one of the sorts who doesn't mind working a little for their pleasure, and if I have to reread a passage (or hit the dictionary) I'm more than happy to do so - like rewatching a favorite Kubrick or Lynch film, I get something new each time. Of course, he ain't for everybody. I've trusted him to make the majority of my record-buying decisions for over 15 years now and he's never disappointed me, but you might be another story. I'd recommend that if you have any curiosity about the fella you should check out his monthly Consumer Guide column in the Village Voice to see if your tastes are in the same ballpark. Or, if you're one of those truly enlightened folks who like great writing even if they don't always disagree with the opinions expressed, I'd definitely say give this book a try.

An excellent collage of research data on rock art
By taking a scientific approach, the text has succeeded in giving rock art research the kind of credibility and respectability that it needed for some time. It is well written and focuses on a broad spectrum of case studies from all over the world. A must read for both professional and popular audiences.

The Armchair Mountaineer
Published in Paperback by Menasha Ridge Press (01 October, 1998)
Author: David Reuther
Average review score:

Wonderful tour thru the great literature of mountaineering
Hey, this is a great book, from start to finish. It contains wonderful excerpts from the literature of mountaineering/alpinism/rock climbing, people who take themselves seriously, people who don't take themselves seriously, moments from the history of mountaineering that form alps of their own (you should pardon the cliche) in the literature.

I would consider this to be an excellent volume for anyone who has just finished =Into Thin Air= or =The Climb= and who would like to find more to read in the genre. Harvesting the citation list alone is going to keep my reading pile fat and happy for months!

Disclaimer: I'm not a mountain-climber, and I don't play one on TV; I'm just an average wage slug who enjoys a good story well told.

Art and Eskimo Power: The Life and Times of Alaskan Howard Rock
Published in Hardcover by Epicenter Press (January, 1992)
Author: Lael Morgan
Average review score:

A courageous Eskimo journalist
The shaman predicted that Howard Rock would become a great man. He was born in 1911 in a sod igloo in Point Hope, an ancient Eskimo village in northwest Alaska where the people had hunted whales and lived off the land for centuries. Instead of becoming a hunter, Howard became an accomplished artist and crusading newspaper editor. He helped defend his people from a controversial Atomic Energy Commission proposal to excavate a harbor near the village with an above-ground atomic blast. Then Rock founded the Tundra Times and helped Alaska's Native people press their aboriginal land claims before Congress, ultimately winning a settlement. Deeply moving.

The Art of Rock
Published in Hardcover by Abbeville Promotional (July, 1989)
Average review score:

Comprehensive
This is the father of all rock poster art books. If you can get your hands on one of these, you will not be sorry. This is a very thick, very glossy, very comprehensive book. It's huge! If you don't mind laying out the cash--this book is pricey--you won't be disappointed.

The Art of the Shaman: Rock Art of California
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Utah Pr (Trd) (July, 2000)
Author: David S. Whitley
Average review score:

Book for Life
This is a fabulous book for someone who loves art, who is interested in ancient peoples, or for someone who is interested in preserving the past. Rock art, our global priceless heritage, is fast disappearing -- especially in such populated places as California. Dr. Whitley is among a handful of archaeologists in North America who are trying to understand this gift from the past before it is vandalized out of existence. Whether you like coffee table books or whether you just want to learn about rock art, this book is for you.

Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom: The Golden Age of Rock
Published in Paperback by Grove Press (04 November, 2001)
Author: Nik Cohn
Average review score:

Great insight from a young R&R critic
I just read a recent review of this book which was very negative. The critic didn't like the young Nik Cohn's opinions. Well, I am 60 years old and was there at the dawn of rock 'n roll and loved this book. I was pleasantly surprised that a 22 year old Brit back in 1968 could have captured the essence of the fifties music scene and also described in detail what happened soon thereafter. In fact, I agreed with most of his very descriptive analyses and even when I didn't, I understood his point of view. His knowledge on the topic and style of writing was superb.
